Mayor of Warsaw Rafał Trzaskowski visited Kyiv on Wednesday (January 11), assisted by his counterparts from Prague, Budapest, and Bratislava. This was his first trip to Ukraine's capital city since Russia attacked that country in February last year.
Trzaskowski went to Kyiv together with mayors of Prague - Zdenek Hrib, Budapest - Gergely Karacsony, and Bratislava - Matus Vallo, all united under the Pact of Free Cities.
Later on Wednesday, Trzaskowski informed on Twitter that Warsaw would send 10 of its older metro trains to Kyiv.
The last time Warsaw mayor visited Kyiv was on 15 February, 2022. Together with Prague Mayor Zdenek Hrib, he met with the mayor of Ukraine's capital, Vitaliy Klitschko.
"The crucial thing is that we are here to demonstrate solidarity with Kyiv and the Ukrainian people. We want to show in these difficult times that we stand with Kyiv mayor," Rafał Trzaskowski said at the time. "We have asked him to join the Pact of free Cities," he added.
"We are here also to show our readiness to help. Should anything happen, both Warsaw and Prague are ready to offer support," Trzaskowski said.
The Pact of Free Cities, founded by the Mayors of the Visegrad Four capitals (Warsaw, Prague, Bratislava and Budapest) in 2019, is a global network of cities determined to stand up for progressive values and fight against nationalistic populism.
