A Friday night party in Bydgoszcz nearly ended tragically for two men. One of them fell into the river, and the other, in an attempt to save him, jumped in after him. Quick thinking by the police officers and witnesses nearby helped save them. Both men were taken into medical care, and their lives are not in danger.
The incident occurred in the early hours of Saturday, December 14, around 2:40 a.m. While patrolling Stary Port Street in Bydgoszcz, the officers noticed several people standing near the edge of the Brda River, with one of them walking behind a wall.
The officers rushed over to check what had happened. At that moment, they saw two men in the water, one of whom was calling for help, as his friend had fallen into the river and neither could get out.
"Officers, along with witnesses, quickly managed to pull one of the men from the water. He was limp and appeared unconscious. On the riverbank, they found he was unresponsive. Officers checked his vital signs. Due to hypothermia, his pulse was faint, and his breathing shallow. The officers placed him in a safe position and cleared his airways, allowing him to expel a significant amount of water. They ensured his thermal comfort and monitored his vital signs until the arrival of the emergency medical team," reported the Bydgoszcz City Police Headquarters.

The second man, who managed to get out of the water on his own, was taken by the officers to their patrol car to warm up.
"After leaving the club, the men wanted to sit on a wall near Mostowa Street, but one of them lost his balance and fell into the river. His friend tried to pull him to the shore, but was unsuccessful. After a moment, he noticed that he was having increasing difficulty staying afloat, so he decided to jump into the Brda River to rescue him. While in the water, he called for help," reported the Bydgoszcz police.
According to the medical rescuers' decision, the rescued man was taken to the hospital for examination due to hypothermia, while the second man was driven home by the police officers.
