Speaker of Poland's Senate, Tomasz Grodzki, and speaker of the Sejm, Elżbieta Witek, on Thursday took part in the European Conference of Presidents of Parliament of Council of Europe member states, held in Athens. When the Chairwoman of the Federation Council of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation, Valentina Matviyenko, started her speech, the Polish duo left the room. "It is an act of solidarity with countries whose territories are occupied by Russia," Polish Senate said in a tweet.

A two-day European Conference of Presidents of Parliament of Council of Europe member states began on Thursday in Athens.

When the Chairwoman of the Federation Council of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation (upper house), Valentina Matviyenko, took the floor, her Polish counterparts, Tomasz Grodzki and Elżbieta Witek left the plenary room.

Grodzki, who is Poland's upper house speaker, and Witek, speaker of the lower house, explained in tweets that it was a manifestation of solidarity with countries occupied by Russia.

The participants of the conference were to exchange experiences and ideas on addressing the public health crisis caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, the challenges of climate change, and the common future of all European citizens.
