The Office for Foreigners will not issue decisions regarding Syrian citizens applying for international protection until the situation in Syria is clarified, Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs and Administration Maciej Duszczyk announced on Tuesday (December 10).
In a post on X, Duszczyk stated: "Until the situation in Syria is clarified, the Office for Foreigners will not issue decisions regarding Syrian citizens applying for international protection."
He added that the situation in Syria would certainly be discussed during Thursday’s EU Council on Home Affairs meeting.
In response to the situation in Syria, several EU countries have suspended the processing of asylum applications from Syrian nationals. These measures have been implemented by countries such as Germany, Austria, Denmark, the Czech Republic, Sweden, Belgium, Croatia, and Italy.
On Sunday morning, Syrian fighters declared the capture of the country’s capital, Damascus, ending over 50 years of Assad family rule. This marks a new phase in the civil war that began in 2011, during which Assad was supported by Russia, Iran, and Hezbollah, a Lebanese group under Tehran's influence.
The liberation of Damascus and the overthrow of Assad were carried out by rebels led by Hay'at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), a former Al-Qaeda affiliate. The group is led by Abu Mohammad al-Julani, a former Al-Qaeda operative.
