The Ministry of Health informed on Wednesday about a record 53,420 coronavirus infections reported in the last 24 hours, as well as 276 COVID-related deaths. Since the start of the pandemic Poland has reported a total of 4,637,776 infections and 104,373 deaths.
Poland reported 53,420 new COVID-19 cases on Wednesday, according to health ministry data, joining Hungary, the Czech Republic, Bulgaria and Romania in hitting its highest infection rate of the pandemic, driven by the Omicron variant.
"We have to be ready for a further rise in cases, even above 60,000," a Health Ministry spokesperson told a news conference.
In an attempt to combat the surge, Poland has stepped up testing, performing a record 173,000 official tests in 24 hours.
It has also said older primary and secondary schoolchildren must switch to remote learning from Thursday.
According to Wednesday's report, the highest number of infections was reported in the Masovian Voivodeship - 8,524.
Last week on Wednesday, the Health Ministry informed about 30,586 newly confirmed infections. Today's number is higher by 22,834 cases, which is an increase by 74%.
The ministry also said in Wednesday's report that 276 COVID patients died, of which 214 sufferred from pre-existing medical conditions.
Since the start of the pandemic Poland has reported a total of 4,637,776 infections and 104,373 deaths.
