Mayor of Gdańsk Paweł Adamowicz has invited the Minister of Defense Mariusz Błaszczak to the observances of the anniversary of WWII outbreak at Westerplatte. "We find it important to include the Polish Army representatives in the commemorations," Mr Adamowicz wrote in a letter to the the minister.
"I hereby pass to you my best wishes on the eve of Polish Armed Forces Day, which I would like you to direct on your behalf to all Polish soldiers and officers. I wish them feeling of sheer pride for their service to the Homeland," mayor of Gdańsk wrote in a letter to defense minister. The letter has been published on Twitter.
As Adamowicz wrote, on behalf of the citizens of Gdańsk and his own, he'd like to invite Mariusz Błaszczak "the Minister of Defense of the Polish Republic to official commemorations of the 79th anniversary of the WWII outbreak which will be traditionally held on the 1st of September 2018 at 4:45 at Westerplatte".
Adamowicz underlined that Westerplatte commemorations, in line with the ceremonial, are a patriotic event "and thus they neither state, nor military in character".
"I cannot imagine, however, the absence of the Polish soldiers, being the heirs of those who spilled their blood for Poland. We find it important to include the Polish Army representatives in the commemorations," wrote the mayor of Gdańsk.
The letter by the mayor of Gdańsk comes after last week's mutual accusations between Mr Adamowicz and the ministry of defense regarding the presence of Polish Armed Forces representatives at the Westerplatte commemorations.
