A collection of 14 works by Marc Chagall (1887-1985) have been purchased by the National Museum in Warsaw. The works from the Russian-French artist's late period will be at display in the spring of 2022.
The National Museum in Warsaw has purchased a collection of works by Russian-French modernist artist Marc Chagall. The collection consists of 14 pieces in colour from the artist's last period - 1960s and 70s.
The museum director Łukasz Gaweł said that, in said period, the artist had been already rich, which can be seen in the drawing materials and paper he had used. "The pictures that Chagall's family donated to an auction in Switzerland are in excellent condition," Gaweł said.
Museum curator Anna Manicka said that some of the works have been purchased at an auction, and some separately. "We had to really fight for some of the works, (...) "it's one of the most exquisite purchases the museum has completed in recent years".
The 14 works by Chagall - some referring to Jewish culture, others depicting flying animals, lovers, or flowers - will be exhibited in the spring of 2022.
The museum already two other prints by this artist - illustrations to his autobiography "Mein Leben", and to Nikolai Gogol's "Dead Souls".
Marc Chagall, born Moishe Shagal, was a Russian-French artist. An early modernist, he was associated with several major artistic styles and created works in a wide range of artistic formats, including painting, drawings, book illustrations, stained glass, stage sets, ceramics, tapestries and fine art prints.
