Schools in Częstochowa are hiring people from Ukraine to help in classes. Their role of the assistants is to support the youngest refugees who often don't know Polish and are abroad for the first time.
Ukrainian school assistants are helping children to understand the grading system. It's very important because there is a 12-grade scale. As a result, a Ukrainian pupil may feel disappointed upon getting a 5 from a test in Poland.
Two Ukrainian women support pupils at School No. 31 in Częstochowa. One of them is a 74-year-old woman named Maria, who came to Poland on February 27. "I can't speak about it, because for me as a grandmom it was a very painful experience. I ended up here with nothing. I was looking for work and they got me one, as an assistant to a Polish language teacher," said Maria, not hiding her emotions.
The woman added that thanks to the job she would be able to buy food and clothes for her grandchildren who had come to Poland with her. Being able to help other is very important to Maria. That is why the city hall is looking for more people from Ukraine who would like to become assistants in local schools. The most wanted are candidates speaking both Polish and Ukrainian, as well as English.
"Obviously it wasn't that easy in the beginning, as the children didn't understand Polish and were confused as to what they were supposed to do. But the Poles and Poland are really helping," another assistant said, adding that the kids had felt this care quite quickly and settled in the new environment.
