Strong winds and snowstorms have been sweeping through Poland on Monday. Harsh weather forced firefighters to intervene hundreds of times across the country, mainly due to fallen trees. At least three people have been injured.
Between midnight and noon on Monday (Jan. 17), the fire service received 3,263 calls regarding damage caused by strong wind - said Karol Kierzkowski from State Fire Service Main Headquarters. The highest number of interventions took place in Masovian Voivodeship - 852.
By noon, at least three people were reported injured due to the strong wind - a tree branch fell on a man and a woman in Elbląg, whereas a subway construction element injured a worker in Warsaw.
In the capital city, the wind was falling trees, blowing off rooftops and causing havoc at construction sites, and damaging vehicles.
The fire service also had to intervene 479 times in Łódź Voivodeship, 406 times in West Pomeranian, 347 in Greater Poland, 331 in Kuyavian-Pomeranian, 312 in Pomeranian, 182 in Warmian-Masurian, and 74 in Podlaskie and Lubuskie.
Poland's Institute of Meteorology and Water Management (IMGW) has issued weather alerts for the whole country. For most places, a second degree alerts have been announced, where the wind may reach the speed of up to 100 km/h.
The only first degree alerts have been issued in parts of the Karpaty region, but second degree warnings against snowstorms are also in place there.
Since Sunday evening, the Government Security Centre (RCB) has been sending out text messages to citizens warning them against the dangerous weather.
