Russia's Federal Security Service (FSB) has detained a man working in a strategic enterprise who is believed to have been passing secret information to Polish security services, Interfax informed on Friday (Jan. 12), quoting a statement by the FSB. "Our facility in Moscow is currently gathering information regarding this matter," the Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in an email reply to tvn24.pl's request for comment.
The man, who worked in an enterprise in the Penza region located in the middle of the European part of Russia, is said to have been detained for cooperating with Polish secret services - the FSB said.
The enterprise has the status of "special significance," a term used to designate special or military areas as well as companies and organizations that cannot operate without additional security measures. Such places are secured by the FSB, while all employees need to obtain a special clearance.
FSB: spied in exchange for help in moving abroad
According to the FSB, the detained man established contact with Polish special services to pass information related to the company's operations in exchange for assistance in moving abroad.
"As a result of operational and intelligence activities, the illegal operation of the man was documented, which involved collecting information about the company's production volume as part of the state defence order," the press release said.
The man has been detained pursuant to the act pertaining to secret cooperation with a foreign state, Interfax wrote.
MFA: no information other than that from Interfax
We asked the Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs to comment on the Interfax news.
"Our facility in Moscow is currently gathering information regarding this matter. At the moment we have no additional information other than that from Interfax," the MFA replied in an email.
