Polish esteemed historian, sociologist, writer, and former director of the Jewish Historical Institute Prof. Paweł Śpiewak died at the age of 71 on Thursday (March 30). His son Jan Śpiewak informed about his father's passing.
Paweł Śpiewak was a sociologist and historian of ideas. He received his Ph.D. in humanities in 1984 and habilitation in 2000 - both at the University of Warsaw.
Between 2011 and 2020, he served as Director of the Jewish Historical Institute in Warsaw.
In 2013, he received the Father Józef Tischer Award for his lifetime achievements in the field of "religious and philosophical literature".
Prof. Śpiewak was also a member of the Community College at the POLIN Museum of the History of Polish Jews.
In the 2005 parliamentary election, Paweł Śpiewak won a seat in the Sejm of the 5th term. He ran as an unafilliated candidate on the Civic Platform list. He did not run for re-election in the 2007 snap election.
