On Tuesday at 6am, the National Electoral Commission (PKW) announced the final results of the first round of the 2020 presidential election. The incumbent president Andrzej Duda won 43.50 percent of votes, while his main rival - mayor of Warsaw Rafał Trzaskowski - 30.46%. This means that both candidates will face each other in a presidential run-off on July 12. The voter turnout was 64.51%.
Poland's President Andrzej Duda got the most votes in the first round of elections, final results showed on Tuesday, as the focus turned to what looks set to be a close-fought run-off vote on July 12.
Andrzej Duda, an ally of the ruling nationalist Law and Justice (PiS) party, will now face off against liberal Warsaw mayor Rafał Trzaskowski, a member of the centrist opposition Civic Platform. The second round has been scheduled for Sunday, July 12.
The president's role is largely ceremonial, but he has the power to veto legislation put forward by parliament.
Trzaskowski would be able to block legislation from the PiS-run lower house of parliament if he can persuade supporters of other candidates to back him and hand him the top job.
Andrzej Duda got 43.50% of the vote in the first-round presidential vote and Rafał Trzaskowski came second with 30.46%, the results showed.
The third result was won by an independent candidate Szymon Hołownia - 13.87%.
Optimistic turnout
The voter turnout amounted to 64.51%. It was more than in the 2015 presidential election when 48.96% of eligible voters took part in the ballot.
The PKW also informed on Tuesday that there were 58.301 invalid votes - 0.3% of all cast votes.
Second round poll
On Sunday (June 28) evening, after the exit polls had been published, Kantar pollster carried out a survey for "Fakty" TVN and TVN24, asking respondents who they would vote for in the second round run-off on July 12.
According to the poll, Andrzej Duda would secure 45.4% of votes, whereas Rafał Trzaskowski - 44.7%, with 9.9% not declaring support for neither of the two.
