Leader of the Third Way coalition, Szymon Hołownia and Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz, met with Poland's President Andrzej Duda on Wednesday (Oct. 25). "The president has made it clear he would convene the first session of the Sejm, most likely, the very last minute," Hołownia said after the meeting. He added the president did not want to shorten the current term of the lower house. Kosiniak-Kamysz said Duda had not yet made any decisions regarding tapping a new prime minister.
Polish President Andrzej Duda, an ally of the ruling nationalists Law and Justice (PiS), held consultations on Tuesday and Wednesday with all the parliamentary parties that won seats in the elections.
With PiS falling short of a majority, pro-European Union opposition parties appear poised to take power in a significant shift for Poland after eight years of disputes with Brussels over issues ranging from judicial independence to LGBT rights.
On Wednesday, he met with the leaders of Third Way, New Left, and Confederation.
The first ones to meet with the president on Wednesday were the two leaders of the Third Way grouping - Szymon Hołownia (chief of Poland 2050) and Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz (chief of Polish People's Party).
Hołownia: we were asked about our detailed plans
"The president has made it clear he would convene the first session of the Sejm, most likely, the very last minute," Hołownia said after the meeting. He added the president did not want to shorten the current term of the lower house.
"We are optimistic that there will be no obstruction from the president, it was a responsible position that Mr President took today," he said.
Hołownia mentioned the talks also had pertained to other issues, such as security, energy, Poland's position in the European Union and on the international stage.
"We asked about the detailed plans of our grouping and the future coalition in these areas. I think it was a good coversation, demonstrating Mr President's will to cooperate and discuss all things pertaining to Poland with the future government, whose majority is guaranteed by Third Way."
Kosiniak-Kamysz: president hasn't decided on new PM yet
"We are able to establish a parliamentary majority, presidiums of the Sejm and the Senate, and appoint a prime minister. We assured the president that this our firm standpoint and that we are determined to pursue it as soon as possible," PSL chief Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz said after the meeting with Duda.
He also noted that "the president has not yet made a decision with regards to appointing a prime minister".
"We deeply trust it will happen sooner rather than later, that a parliamentary majority will be confirmed by all our groupings. Then we will be able to comfortably begin to carry out our program, to which we are determined and for which we are ready," the PSL chief said.
