The annual Good Friday celebrations were held at Kalwaria Zebrzydowska Monastery in southern Poland. According to the organizers of the event, approximately 65,000 faithful took part in this year's Way of the Cross, which is a form commemorating the passion and death of Jesus Christ.
Thousands of Christian pilgrims observing Good Friday followed the Way of the Cross procession in Kalwaria Zebrzydowska (Lesser Poland Voivodeship).
"Ankle-deep in mud, sometimes literally falling down and picking themselves up, thousands of faithful once again took part in the Way of the Cross in Kalwaria Zebrzydowska," said TVN24 reporter Konrad Borusiewicz who watched the Good Friday procession.
Tens of thousands of faithful followed the ways of Christ's Passion towards Pilate's Palace, where the "Decree sentecing Jesus to death" was read out, and the Archbishop of Kraków Marek Jędraszewski gave a pastoral address.
Construction of the Sanctuary of Kalwaria Zebrzydowska was financed by the Zebrzydowski family in early 17th century. Basing his ideas on the reading of Adrichomius, Mikołaj Zebrzydowski then decided to build stations dedicated to the Passion of Christ. The local Passion Play begins on Palm Sunday, whereas the main part of celebration starts on Holy Wednesday.
