Polish athletes have won four medals, two gold and two silver, at the European Athletics Championships in Berlin on Tuesday. Wojciech Nowicki won gold in hammer throw, while Paweł Fajdek came second. In shot put, the gold medal went to Michał Haratyk and the silver to Konrad Bukowiecki.
While gold and silver for Nowicki and fajdek respectively was "expected", the two medals in the shot put competition came as a surprise. Haratyk may have been a favourite to win, however, few have expected Bukowiecki to stand on the podium, especially given his results in the qualifications.
Polish team is first in the overall classification with four medals (2-2-0). The Berlin championship ends on Sunday.
Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki congratulated the athletes. "A wonderful start of the European Athletics Championships - congratulations to our hammer-throwers and shot-putters who are the strongest in Europe, we are with you!" wrote Morawiecki.
