They were walking down the street with a donation box, when they noticed through an apartment window that an older man was lying on the floor. They immediately called help. Two teenage girls from Chrustowo (Greater Poland Voivodeship) were praised by the authorities and the police.
On Sunday (Jan. 30), during the 30th Grand Finale of the Great Orchestra of Christmas Charity, two 14-year-old volunteers - Julia and Gabriela - were collecting money for the charity in their home village of Chrustowo. Suddenly, they looked through a window of one of the apartments and saw a man lying on the floor. They could not get inside because the doors were locked.
"The girls immediately called a mother of one of them and asked her to call for help," said Izabela Leśnik from Oborniki Police.
Firefighters arrived at the scene first and opened the doors for the paramedics, who decided the 67-year-old had to be taken to a hospital in Poznań.
"The teenagers' resolve deserves the highest recognition and should serve as an example for all of us. This is a proof that the right approach can save somebody's life," Leśnik underscored.
The exemplary conduct of the girls has been rewarded. Greater Poland Voivode Michał Zieliński and Chief of Voivodeship Police in Poznań Piotr Mąka met with the volunteers and their parents at the girls school, and thanked them for their courage and maturity in a difficult situation they had found themselves in.
"I'm certain that thanks to young people like Julia and Gabriela, our world will become a better place," voivode Michał Zieliński said at the meeting.
