Polish President Andrzej Duda said on Tuesday (January 17) he hoped some of Ukraine's allies including Germany would provide Kyiv tanks.
"We are trying to organise a bigger support for Ukraine, so we hope that there is a few partners, a few allies who will give tanks to Ukraine, Leopard tanks, Challenger tanks from Great Britain," Duda said at the World Economic Forum in the Swiss resort of Davos.
"Yes, so we hope that producer of the tanks, Germany, will also participate in this," he added.
Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda said he "strongly believes" Germany will provide Ukraine, which is fighting a Russian invasion, with Leopard tanks.
"Germans decided that instead of providing humanitarian aid, they decided to deliver weapons, it was first a very important qualitative moment in the decision making of Germany. Now we are in the situation where there is more commitment needed, stronger commitment needed to deliver armoured vehicles, tanks to Ukraine, and we hope very much that our strong ally will do this," Nauseda stressed.
Speaking at the same panel, North Macedonian President Stevo Pendarovski described the Western Balkans as a soft spot in Europe's security architecture and ripe for potential influence campaigns by Russia, adding that he believed the United States should pay more attention to the situation in the region.
"We have two fragile points, hot spots if you like from time to time in the Western Balkan region - this is the Republic of Srpska within Bosnia and Herzegovina, and north of the Republic of Kosovo. What (Russian President Vladimir) Putin's regime is doing is for years back, not only since the war in Ukraine started, but for years back, he is trying to provoke the people there to disrupt the integrity of these two countries," Pendarovski said.
