Streets of Polish cities were illuminated by the "Light Up the Sky" ceremony. The climax of the 28th Finale of the Great Orchestra of Christmas Charity. It was a special evening in the city of Gdańsk. All in honour of Gdańsk Mayor Paweł Adamowicz, who a year ago, had been stabbed by a knife-attacker during GOCC evening, and died the following day.

During the 28th Finale of the Great Orchestra of Christmas Charity, everyone paid special attentiont to the city of Gdańsk.
On 13th of January 2019, during the GOCC Finale in Gdańsk, a 27-year-old Stefan W. stabbed with a knife the then Mayor of Gdańsk Paweł Adamowicz. The mayor was taken to a hospital in critical condition. He died the following day in hospital.
Deeply in mourning, residents of Gdańsk were meeting in the streets, lighting candles, and, listening to Simon & Garfunkel's "Sounds of silence", remembering their mayor.
Before the countdown to the "Light Up the Sky" this very song was performed by the Sound and Grace choir together with Audiofeels, on a stage at the European Solidarity Centre. A movie showing Paweł Adamowicz was displayed on a big screen.
"Won't get intimidated"
Shortly after Magdalena Adamowicz entered the stage.
"Dear all, it's a very difficult moment for me, the most difficult one since January 14th, 2019 - to be right here with you, to speak to you. Remember that goodness prevails, evil can never win, we won't get intimidated," she said.
After Mrs. Adamowicz, her son Piotr Adamowicz came onstage, followed by Agnieszka Buczyńska from the Regional Volunteer Centre, and the Mayor of Gdańsk Aleksandra Dulkiewicz.
After the memory of mayor Adamowicz, at 8pm, a countdown started and moments later "Light Up the Sky" began and people flashed their mobile phones. The band Voo Voo and Tomasz Organek sang John Lennon's "Imagine", while confetti was thrown at the stage.

"Light Up the Sky" ceremony was held also in other Polish cities, among others, in Warsaw, Cracow, Suwałki, Międzychód, Sosnowiec, Wisła, Wrocław or Łódź. Each year, the event marks the climax of the Great Orchestra of Christmas Charity.
