The National Electoral Commission (PKW) registered three election committees on Tuesday: Razem Party, Civic Platform and Modern Party's coalition and Polish People's Party, the Chairman of the PKW Wojciech Hermeliński informed on Thursday. He added that the deadline for registering committees for local elections passes on 27 August.
Poland will hold local elections on October 21 with a second round on November 4, according to a document published on Tuesday on the website of the Journal of Laws.
"Three election committees have already registered. Razem Party's committee has came in first and has been soon followd by the commitee of Civic Platform and Modern Party coalition, as well as Polish People's Party committee," Hermeliński informed on Thursday on the Polish public radio.
The PKW chairman reminded that, according to the law, the campaign starts when the President annonuces the date of the elections, and that the deadline for registering committees for local elections passes on 27 August.
"Usually, most candidates register in the last days before deadline. We expect that from tomorrow or from next week on, the number of candidates will increase," he added.
The vote could give the Law and Justice (PiS) party, which rules nationally and enjoys strong public support but is in a minority in most regional administrations, a stronger foothold in local government.
That would the socially conservative but economically left-leaning party more say in how public funds are spent ahead of next year's general election.
According to the latest poll by IBRiS pollster, PiS could secure a majority in 12 out of Poland's 16 regional legislatures.
