Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki said on Tuesday that Poland and Lithuania consider the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline project a threat to energy security in central and eastern Europe.
"Poland and Lithuania have a very similar stance saying that the construction of Nord Stream 2 is s threat to energy security in this part of Europe," Morawiecki told a televised news conference with Lithuanian Prime Minister Saulius Skvernelis.
"Here, in this context, it's worth to mention the growing strategic security in Poland, as we have more and more diversified gas supplies, which makes a stable point of gas and energy security in this part of Europe, and this way we also improve energy security of the Baltic states," Polish Prime Minister said.
He added that the PMs also discussed challenges Europe is facing, such as multiannual financial framework. "Here, Poland and Lithuania have very similar, if not identical, standpoints regarding the budget negotiations for the next 7 years," Morawiecki stressed.
Polish PM also said that they also touched upon agriculture as Poland has taken over this portfolio in the new European Commission. "We also talked about mutual acquisitions and joint defense spending. But also about business, economic issues and investements; Polish investments in Lithuania. And, of course, we invite Lithuania firms to invest in Poland," said the chief of Polish government.
"I'm glad that these economical and business ties not only are close, but are getting closer, as it makes us regard many European issued in the same way," Morawiecki added.
The Nord Stream 2 project would double Russia's capacity for piping gas across the Baltic Sea to Germany.
Led by Russian gas exporter Gazprom, it is backed by Shell, Germany's Uniper and BASF unit Wintershall, France's Engie and Austria's OMV.
