Chamber of Fiscal Administration officers from the Masovian branch have detected and secured pneumatic and gas weapons, a crossbow, parts of an automatic gun, and hundreds of rounds. The arsenal has been found in boxes declared as sweets, cornflakes and flippers, sent over from North America.
"The contents of one of the seized packages, in which three pneumatic guns have been found, were declared as candies and chocolates worth 20 dollars. In another package, which was supposed to contain cereals and flippers, our officers have found a crossbow, a set of metal-jacket bolts, and rubbers, whereas in a box marked as picture frames, shoes and vitamins, they have found 150 pieces of ammunition," Chamber of Fiscal Administration spokesperson Justyna Pasieczyńska said.
She added that most of the seized weapons came from North American countries: "There are different regulations there, regarding purchase and possession of firearms. Unfortunately, many buyers forget about it. Weapons are available in many internet stores, where it is declared as a legal commodity.
Firearm licences issued only by chiefs of voivodeship police
Spokesperson for the Chamber of Fiscal Administration says weapons can be only sent by operators specialised in this area and holding proper licences. "Besides, it's illegal to import any guns or ammunition from a non-EU country without proper approval and certificate. People ordering weapons often try to avoid these rules by declaring the contents of a package as low-value delivery, including toys, sweets or other items of this sort," Pasieczyńska explained.
In Poland, anyone possessing a firearm and ammunition must hold a proper licence issued by a chief of police in a given voivodeship. "Lack of such licence can result in serious consequences. Anyone possessing a firearm and ammunition without a proper licence may face a custodial sentence from 6 months up to 8 years," the IAS spokesperson said.
