EU leaders tapped acting Spanish Foreign Minister Josep Borrell to serve as the next top diplomat for the European Union in Brussels on Tuesday (July 2).
As the High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Borrell will also have a seat on the European Commission, which means he must still be approved by the European Parliament.
He will replace Federica Mogherini, and is the first man to hold the position since it's current form was established in 2009.
He will co-ordinate the EU's external action and relations for the next five years.
He is a member of the Party of European Socialists and previously served as European Parliament president from 2004 to 2007.
