"The analysis of the collected documentation allowed to assess said actions by Card. Stanisław Dziwisz as correct, and therefore, the Holy See decided not to proceed further," the Apostolic Nunciature in Poland said in a statement on Friday. Dziwisz, who was a long-time secretary of Pope John Paul II, had been accused of covering up clerical sex abuse.
Cardinal Stanisław Dziwisz, the longtime former secretary of Pope John Paul II, had been accused of covering up clerical sex abuse in his position as the Archbishop of Kraków.
Last June, the Vatican set up a commission led by Cardinal Angelo Bagnasco to look at allegations of cover-ups by abuse victims.
The Apostolic Nunciature in Poland issued a statement on Friday informing that the Holy See had examined the documentation put together by Card. Angelo Bagnasco, Archbishop Emeritus of Genoa, upon his visit to Poland on June 17-26, 2021, "whose aim was to verify some cases related with actions by Card. Stanisław Dziwisz during his time as the metropolitan archbishop of Kraków (2005-2016)".
"The analysis of the collected documentation allowed to assess said actions by Card. Stanisław Dziwisz as correct, and therefore, the Holy See decided not to proceed further," reads the statement.
Dziwisz: I'm grateful for a fair judgement
Cardinal Dziwisz issued a statement regarding the Vatican's verdict, in which he thanked all those "who helped to responsibly address the allegations made against him".
He added that Cardinal Bagnasco had done all he could to investigate said "undeserved and painful" charges.
"I hope that today's communique by the Apostolic Nunciature in Poland will not only help to solve the case, but also to bring serenity back to those who felt affected with the allegations I faced," Dziwisz wrote.
"I am grateful to the Holy See for a fair judgement of the case," the cardinal added.
