By filing an official indictment against Stefan W. at the court- the killer of Gdańsk Mayor Paweł Adamowicz - Gdańsk District Prosecutor's Office has ended a lenghty investigation into the tragedy. The mayor was brutally slain during a public event in January, 2019.
Gdańsk District Prosecutor's Office spokeswoman Grażyna Wawryniuk said on Friday that Stefan W. has been charged with premeditated murder with motives deserving special condemnation.
"The accused has also been charged with coercing another person to certain actions," Wawryniuk added.
When committing both crimes, the accused already has already had a criminal record.
Adamowicz was attacked while attending the annual Great Orchestra of Christmas Charity, a fundraiser where volunteers collect money for medical equipment in hospitals.
The mayor was on stage giving thanks to the residents of Gdańsk. "Gdańsk is the most wonderful city in the world," he said. The countdown marking the end of the event began, when a man ran onto the stage. He threw himself at the mayor and stabbed him 3 times with a 14,5-centemeter knife.
Speaking on the stage before he was overpowered by security officers, the attacker accused the mayor's former party of putting him in prison, where he said he was tortured. He didn't try to run away or resist.
The attacker was identified by Polish authorities as a 27-year-old named Stefan, who was released last month from prison where he had served 5-1/2 years for attempted bank robbery.
Mayor Paweł Adamowicz was taken to Gdańsk University Clinical Centre. He died there on January 14, 2019.
