Starting January 1, 2019, the stricter regulations regarding trade on Sunday come into effect - trade ban will be lifted only on the last Sunday of each month.
The law curbing trade on Sundays and holidays came into force in March 2018. According to the regulation, in 2018 trade on the seventh day of the week was allowed only on the first and the last Sunday of each month (with a few exceptions).
From the 1st of January 2019, the provisons curbing the Sunday trade will be even stricter, as the shops will be allowed to be open only on the last Sunday of each month, as well as on two consecutive Sunday's before Christmas and on one before Easter.
The law assumes 32 exceptions. Trade ban will not be binding for bakeries, confectioneries, ice-cream shops, gas stations, flower shops, gift shops, newsstands selling public transport tickets, tobacco, loteries, bookmakers and postal points.
Any shops can be open, as long as the proprietor works behind the counter. Franchise owners may open their shops, as long as they trade "on their on behalf and account".
The ban will not apply also to trade facilities at railway stations, sea ports and harbours, airports, duty free zones, city public transport, buses, trains, river, sea and air transport. For not complying with the trade ban on Sundays a fine from 1,000 to 100,000 zlotys may be imposed, and even a prison sentence for notorious breaking of the law.
From 2020 on, the trade ban will not apply only on the last Sundays of January, April, June and August, as well as on two consecutive Sundays before Christmas and one before Easter.
