I've felt like a candidate since 2020. That responsibility has been with me in a way since then. We have a score to settle with PiS, Warsaw Mayor Rafał Trzaskowski said during a meeting with voters in Białystok. He is vying to become Civic Coalition's candidate in the 2025 presidential election. He described his rivalry with Radosław Sikorski in the primary elections as "friendly."
In the primary elections for the presidency in the Civic Coalition, Trzaskowski, who is the deputy head of the Civic Platform (PO) and Mayor of Warsaw, is competing with the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Radosław Sikorski.
On Monday, the Civic Platform published the results of a "big survey" regarding their chances in the presidential race. The results showed that Trzaskowski would defeat a PiS (Law and Justice) candidate in both the first and second rounds, while Sikorski would lose in the first round.
The primary elections are scheduled for Friday, with the results to be announced on Saturday.
Trzaskowski: I've felt like a candidate since 2020
On Wednesday, Trzaskowski met with the residents of Białystok.
"I remember the rallies from the election campaign almost five years ago, the incredible atmosphere. That energy carried us back then, and we need that energy now. That's why, dear friends, I'm asking for your vote in the primary elections. This is an extremely important matter," he said.
"I decided to propose the primary elections because I believe that our candidate should have the strongest mandate possible. We are heading into a very, very tough battle with PiS in the presidential elections. I am convinced it will be close. I am convinced it will be difficult. And that's why we will need your tremendous support," he continued.
"I've felt like a candidate since 2020, because back then you trusted me. You gave me your support, that incredible energy. And that responsibility has been with me in a way since 2020. We have a score to settle with PiS," Trzaskowski added.
Trzaskowski on "friendly rivalry" with Sikorski
Speaking on his rivalry with Sikorski, the Mayor of Warsaw said: "I reserve my emotions only for the battle with PiS."
"I think that right now, it's a waste of our emotions for something that is, in fact, a friendly rivalry. And even when you sometimes hear certain jabs - I try not to make any jabs - I believe we should let that go, focus on the good sides of both candidates, and most importantly, prepare for December 7, when we will start the election campaign, and then for the campaign itself," Trzaskowski stressed.
"Radek Sikorski suggested, after the American elections, that we should do a thorough poll. We did the poll because we all take this very seriously, and it clearly shows that I have a crushing advantage in the first round. Remember that to get to the second round, you first have to win the first round. Looking at the second round - there's also a significant advantage. I have a 14% advantage over PiS, while Radek has an 8% advantage over PiS," Trzaskowski pointed out.
