Extradition of main suspect in Nowy Świat murder confirmed by Turkey

"I have received confirmation from the Turkish authorities of a positive decision regarding the extradition of Dawid M. The probable date of his transfer to Poland is December 12, 2024," Anna Adamiak, spokesperson for the Prosecutor General's Office, confirmed on Monday, December, 9.

The murder of 29-year-old Maciej occurred in the early hours of May 8, 2022, on Nowy Świat Street in central Warsaw. A bloodied man entered one of the shops, prompting staff to call the police and emergency services. Despite the efforts of paramedics, the man succumbed to his injuries. A search for the suspects ensued. The first suspect, 29-year-old Łukasz G., was apprehended on January 30, 2023, eight months after the incident. Already known to law enforcement, he was one of the co-defendants in the trial of Krzysztof U., alias "Fama," accused of setting fire to a nightclub on Foksal Street.

In June 2023, prosecutors and police announced the capture of two additional suspects. One was 24-year-old Sebastian W., who had been involved in assaulting a bus driver at a Targówek bus terminal in August 2017. The other was 25-year-old Dawid M., a mixed martial arts fighter. Arrested in Turkey, Dawid M. is alleged by investigators to have delivered the fatal blows.

In April this year, Łukasz G. and Sebastian W. were sentenced to seven years in prison. The court also ordered them to pay restitution of 10,000 zlotys each. Another individual involved, Radosław W., who assisted one of them in evading capture, was sentenced to five months of restricted freedom.

On Monday, the Court of Appeal held the first hearing of their appeal. Both Łukasz G. and Sebastian W. had filed appeals against their sentences. However, the court did not proceed with the case as one of the convicted individuals was not brought to the hearing. A new date has not yet been set.
