A small passenger aircraft fell onto a group of people at an airfield in Chrcynno, near Nowy Dwór Mazowiecki - a town near Warsaw. The triage team said 5 people had died in the accident and at least 7 were injured, including 2 seriously.
State Fire Service spokesperson Monika Nowakowska-Brynda told TVN24 that at least 5 people have died and 5 have been injured after a Cessna aircraft smashed into a hangar at a landing field in Chrcynno, near Nowy Dwór Mazowiecki - a town near Warsaw.
Later the triage team clarified at the press briefing that 8 people were injured, including 2 seriously.
On Tuesday morning, number of injured was lowered to 7 by Nowakowska-Brynda.
Earlier on the tvnwarszawa.pl reporter Artur Węgrzynowicz said an aircraft had fallen on a building. "There are injured and dead people," he said, adding that many rescue units were on their way to the scene, including Polish Medical Air Rescue helicopters.
"The rescue operation is under way. The plane is a Cessna 208. This kind of planes are used also in skydiving," Węgrzynowicz added.
The witnesses spoke about a storm that had passed in the area and strong wind. "People who were near the airfield hid inside the hangar. There was a strong gust of wind and that's when the accident happened," the reporter added.
Polish Press Agency said after 8:30 p.m. the pilot was dead and two people were missing.
Paweł Plagowski of Nowy Dwór Mazowiecki said fire service confirmed the reports regarding the accident.
"The situation is dynamic. Rescue operation is under way. Most likely 12 people have been injured. Two of them are being resuscitated," Plagowski said.
Most tragic air accident in 9 years
This has been the most tragic air accident in Poland in 9 years. On July 5, 2014, a small aircraft carrying skydivers crashed in Topolów, near Częstochowa. Eleven people died and one was injured.
The most tragic accident in the history of Polish aviation happened on May 9, 1987, when Tadeusz Kościuszko Ilyushin Il-62M crashed in the Kabaty Woods nature reserve on the outskirts of Warsaw. All 183 passengers and crew on board were killed in the crash.
Chrcynno is a village in the administrative district of Gmina Nasielsk, within Nowy Dwór County, Masovian Voivodeship, in east-central Poland. It lies approximately 6 kilometres south-east of Nasielsk, 20 km north-east of Nowy Dwór Mazowiecki, and 40 km north of Warsaw.
