Teachers from across Poland rallied outside the education ministry in Warsaw on Tuesday (April 23) as a country-wide teachers' strike continued following failed talks with the government demanding higher pay.
Armed with banners and placards, teachers travelled on buses to the capital from around the country to participate.
If the strike continues it will overlap with the start of the period for students sitting their final high school exams, necessary for them to get into university.
During Tuesday's rally, the head of the Polish Teacher's Union (ZNP) Sławomir Broniarz said that the one thing teachers wanted was fair wages.
Talks between three teachers unions and the government broke down earlier in April, with some teachers sticking by their demand for a monthly salary increase of 1,000 zlotys ($262).
Many teachers are also unhappy with what they say has been chaotic education reform.
Anna Schmidt-Fic, a teacher from the western city of Poznan, read from an open letter to Poland's prime minister which said that building a permanent and modern educational system could not be accomplished during a one-day round table talk.
Teachers' salaries in Poland range from 3,045 to 5,603 zlotys per month. Official data in February showed the average corporate salary in Poland was around 4,949 zlotys.
