The main demand postulated during the April's strike, namely 30-percent pay rise for teachers in 2019, still hasn't been met and we still expect it to be - the chairman of the Polish Teachers' Union (ZNP), Sławomir Broniarz, said on Monday.
The ZNP chief informed at a press conference that between 1 and 15 of September, a poll regarding potential industrial action will be conducted among the school teachers. On September 16, the ZNP presidium will decide on the final form of the protest.
"The referendum will only be organised if the poll results show that teachers are ready for a strike in the form of full walkout, that is returning to the state of affairs as they were in April," Broniarz said.
He added that many forms of protest are being suggested, however, the final decision will be made after consultations with the teachers. "We must consult the teachers. Most of them have already returned to schools, staff meetings are under way. We would like them to tell us by September 15, what form of protest they would like to take part in," he explained.
He stressed that a number of changes beneficial for the teachers will come into effect as a result of April's strike. "These changes include resignation from prolonged promotion, resignation of very complicated procedures regarding the assessment of teachers' work and returning of bonuses for teachers beginning their work in schools," he listed.
He also underscored that the main goal of the strike, namely 30-percent pay rise for teachers in 2019, still hasn't been met. "That's what we still expext and with we will go to teachers with this message," he announced.
He added that if the quality of education raises no doubts, than the teachers should be rewarded with decent salaries.
A strike organised by the Polish Teachers' Union and the Trade Unions' Forum began on April 8. Some teachers from the Solidarity trade union joined in. The action lasted until April 27, when it was suspended until September.
