The meeting between the Polish prime minister, Mateusz Morawiecki and the president of the European Commission, Jean-Claude Juncker will take place on Wednesday at the EU summit in Sofia, informed the spokesperson for the Commission, Margaritis Schinas.
"Both leaders agreed that together with the vice-president of the European Commission, Frans Timmermans they will continue constructive dialogue" (regarding the rule of law - edit.), said spokesperson Schinas.
He also added that on Wednesday, Timmermans will present the progress in the talks with Poland to the Commissioners' College in Brussels.
The EU - West Balkans summit will be held on Thursday in Sofia, but already on Wednesday evening, the EU leaders will meet at the dinner to discuss, among other things, the US withdrawal from the nuclear deal with Iran as well as trade issues.
The dialogue goes on
On Monday, Mr Timmermans presented before the ministers of the interior of the EU states, the progress in the dialogue regarding the rule of law between Poland and the European Commission. After the meeting, at a press conference he said that in the coming weeks, he hopes to reach an agreement with the Polish government. He stressed that, although there were some improvements, they are still insufficient.
"I hope that together with the Polish government we'll be able to use next few weeks to finds further solutions to the issues which the EC mentioned in its recommendations," said the vice-president of the European Commission.
He added, that before the session of the General Affairs Council scheduled on 26 June, a "full spectrum" of solutions is possible. The issue of the Commission's proceedings regarding Poland will be raised again during the June session.
Waiting for move by Brussels
By contrast, Polish deputy foreign minister, Konrad Szymański said after the meeting that Poland has made progress in the rule of law dispute and now expects a move on the European Commission's part. After hearing Mr Timmermans, minister Szymański said that he wasn't under impression that the Commission is ready to make any significant steps regarding this issue.
In recent months, the dialogue between Warsaw and Brussels intensified. In the beginning of May, a meeting took place between the EC officials, including Frans Timmermans and the Polish foreign minister, Jacek Czaputowicz, Chancellery of the President representatives as well as experts from other ministries. At the meeting, further changes to the judiciary acts have been announced and soon after adopted by the Sejm.
