Prime Minister Donald Tusk informed that he had spoken with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, who provided a report on his conversation with Vladimir Putin. "I was satisfied to hear that he not only condemned the Russian aggression, but he also reiterated the Polish position: 'Nothing about Ukraine without Ukraine,'" Tusk wrote on X.
On Friday, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz spoke with Russian dictator Vladimir Putin for the first time in nearly two years, since December 2022.
Government spokesman in Berlin, Steffen Hebestreit, informed that Scholz urged Putin to ensure that Russia is ready for talks with Ukraine to negotiate a lasting, fair peace.
Hebestreit also emphasized that Scholz had spoken with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Wednesday and planned to contact him again after his conversation with Putin.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said the phone call showed deep disagreements over Ukraine, but the fact that they spoke was highly positive.
"There were quite detailed discussions, first of all on the Ukrainian theme, frank discussions... But, of course, we cannot speak of any coincidence of opinions here," Peskov told a Russian state TV reporter after the first call between the two leaders in nearly two years.
Tusk: nothing about Ukraine without Ukraine
On Friday afternoon, the Polish Prime Minister shared in a post on X that he had spoken with the German Chancellor.
"I have just received a call from Chancellor Scholz who gave me an account of his talk with V.Putin. I was satisfied to hear that he not only condemned the Russian aggression, but he also reiterated the Polish position: 'Nothing about Ukraine without Ukraine,'" he wrote.
Zelenskiy: the call opened Pandora's Box
Ukraine said on Friday that phone conversations with Vladimir Putin brought no added value on the path to achieving a "just peace" in Ukraine, after German Chancellor Olaf Scholz spoke to the Russian leader.
"For more than two decades, Putin has used lengthy conversations as a resource to advance his interests. Currently, conversations only give Putin hope of weakening international isolation," the foreign ministry's spokesman, Heorhii Tykhyi, said in a statement.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said that Scholz's call with Putin opened "Pandora's box" by undermining efforts to isolate the Russian leader.
"Now there may be other conversations, other calls. Just a lot of words. And this is exactly what Putin has long wanted: it is extremely important for him to weaken his isolation," Zelenskiy said in his evening address.
