Dawid M. charged with murder in the Nowy Świat stabbing case

"On Friday, the suspect was charged with murder in connection with assault using a dangerous weapon," said Piotr Antoni Skiba, spokesperson for the District Prosecutor's Office in Warsaw.

He added that Dawid M. was unable to clarify his stance on the matter. "He did not confirm whether he admits to the crime or not. We anticipate another interrogation of the suspect in this case, and perhaps after that, we will be able to provide more information regarding the man's position on the charge," said Skiba.

Skiba also mentioned that the prosecutor decided to extend the detention of the suspect and submitted a corresponding request to the District Court in Warsaw-Mokotów. "A hearing has already taken place, but the court's decision has not yet been announced," he added.

"Accompanied by officers from the Convoy Department of the KGP (Police Main Headquarters - ed.) Prevention Bureau, the 26-year-old Dawid M. flew from Turkey to Poland. His arrest and extradition are the result of effective international cooperation and the great determination and involvement of officers from the Search and Identification Department of the Warsaw Police Headquarters," the Warsaw police reported on Thursday via the X portal.

"Other units, including the International Cooperation Bureau of the General Police Headquarters, also participated in the extradition efforts," the statement added.

The murder of 29-year-old Maciej took place in the early morning hours of May 8, 2022, on Nowy Świat Street in central Warsaw. The police and emergency services were called to the scene. Despite the efforts of the paramedics, the man died. An investigation was launched, and a search for the suspects began.

On January 30, 2023, eight months after the incident, Łukasz G., a 29-year-old man known to law enforcement, was arrested. He was one of the co-defendants in the trial of Krzysztof U., aka "Fama," who was accused of setting fire to a club on Foksal Street. In June of the previous year, 24-year-old Sebastian W. was also arrested.

Dawid M., two days after the murder, fled to Turkey using his brother's ID. On March 14, 2023, he was identified and arrested by Turkish police. Efforts for his extradition to Poland began at that time.

In April of this year, Łukasz G. and Sebastian W. were sentenced to seven years in prison. The court also imposed a fine of 10,000 złotys each. The verdict is not final.

Another verdict was delivered for their associate, Radosław W., who helped one of the suspects hide - he received a sentence of five months of restricted freedom.

In early December, the first appellate hearing took place. Łukasz G. and Sebastian W. appealed the verdict. However, the court did not begin proceedings because one of the convicted individuals was not brought to court. No new date for the hearing has been set.
