Minister of the Interior and Administration Marcin Kierwiński has appointed Inspector Marek Boroń as acting chief of the Polish police. Boroń is an experienced officer who used to serve as deputy chief of the Central Investigation Bureau of Police (CBŚP), taking part in the investigation into the so-called wiretapping scandal of 2014. "A huge surprise for the whole police community. He's an officer who used to work in the shadows, he wasn't widely recognized," says Tomasz Zieliński, a tvn24.pl journalist.
The official decision made by minister Kierwiński was announced on Friday (Dec.22) morning.
Kierwiński's choice has surprised many police officers, including those from the National Police Headquarters (KGP), because Boroń's name has not been mentioned among the possible candidates for the chief of police.
"A huge surprise"
"Entrusting him (Marek Boroń) with the role of deputy chief of the National Police Headquarters, who will be acting commander-in-chief of the police, comes as a big, if not a huge surprise for the whole police community. He's an officer who used to work more in the shadows, he wasn't widely recognized, he did not serve as voivodeship police chief, although in recent years he held the highest police offices," tvn24.pl journalist Tomasz Zieliński said on Friday.
Zieliński also noted that Boroń used to be a member of the police trade union. "Good news for all police officers regarding this nomination is that he used to be a union member in the past, and therefore I think he will understand the situation of ordinary police officers. He will be able to address the needs of ordinary cops and, at the same time, he will supervise the most serious investigations."
"He co-managed the Central Investigation Bureau of Police for the last eight years and used to run the intelligence bureau of the National Police Headquarters. ... In the past he also worked at the homicide department of the Warsaw police and dealt with investigations related with Polish politics," Zieliński added.
Homicide department and wiretapping scandal
Recently, Marek Boroń worked as deputy chief of the Intelligence and Criminal Information Department of the National Police Headquarters.
Boroń joined the force 29 years ago as a uniformed officer at a precinct at Warsaw's Ursynów district. Later he served in Warsaw police's homicide department. While working for the Central Investigation Bureau of Police (CBŚP), he took part in the inquiry into the so-called wiretapping scandal of 2014, which shook the Polish political scene at the time. Thanks his work, among others, the police was able to detain one of the waiters from the Sowa i Przyjaciele restaurant who had been secretly recording nearly all members of the then political and business elite of Poland.
