"This truly is a huge success for our formation and our project for Poland," the ruling PiS party chairman Jarosław Kaczyński said during Sunday's (Oct. 15) parliamentary election night. "But of course, we are still facing the question of whether we can turn this success into the next term as the ruling party. And this is something we still don't know," he said in a speech after the the first exit poll had been announced by Ipsos.
According to Ipsos exit poll released after Poland's parliamentary election on Sunday (Oct. 15), democratic opposition stands a chance to form a ruling coalition with 248 seats in the Sejm.
If the final result of the vote matches the exit poll, the ruling Law and Justice party would win the highest number of seats in the lower house of parliament - 200, while Civic Coalition - 163.
Three more would have their MPs in the new Sejm: Third Way, New Left, and Confederation. According to Ipsos, the voter turnout was 72.9%.
Kaczyński: we need to have hope
"We have first exit polls which give us the fourth win in the history of our party. The fourth win in parliamentary elections and third in a row," Kaczyński said during the election night on Sunday.
Kaczyński called the preliminary election results "a huge success" for PiS and Poland. "But of course, we are still facing the question of whether we can turn this success into the next term as the ruling party. And this is something we still don't know," he explained.
"But we need to have hope and we need to know that whether we are in power or we are in opposition, we will keep realizing this project in different ways and we will not let Poland be betrayed," he added.
"We will not let Poland lose the most precious thing in the history of our nation, most precious due to its experiences, and that is independence, the right to decide our own fate. We will certainly be able to do this and we definitely will."
Kaczyński: days of fighting ahead of us
PiS leader also underscored that his party will do its best to keep on pursuing its program "despite this coalition that is against us".
"Remember that there are days of fighting ahead of us, various types of tensions, but the finale, the finale in the form of continuation of our programme, the continuation of everything that we've done for Poland, because we really have done a lot, this finale will be ultimately our victory, but most of all the victory of Poland."
"Regardless of how it pans out and of the final vote count, because we really don't know it yet, we will do everything and - what you often like to repeat - we shall win," Kaczyński added.
