I'm in regular contact with top security representatives in Donald Trump's camp. Europe must urgently take greater responsibility for its own security, Poland's Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski said in a brief statement to the press, after the exit polls for the U.S. presidential election had been released. The country's Minister of National Defense, Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz, also expressed readiness to cooperate with the new U.S. administration.
CNN has declared Donald Trump the winner of the 2024 U.S. presidential election. According to the station's forecast, the former president has secured 276 electoral votes, while Kamala Harris has won 223. A minimum of 270 electoral votes is needed to win.
Poland's Minister of Foreign Affairs Radosław Sikorski gave a brief statement to the press.
"The American people have made their decision, which we respect. It has been confirmed that the Polish foreign policy of maintaining political contacts with both the Democrats and the Republicans was correct. I thank both candidates for their kind words about Poland and for reaffirming our alliance. I am in ongoing contact with top security representatives in Donald Trump's camp," he said.
Sikorski: Europe must urgently take more responsibility
"Europe must urgently take more responsibility for its own security," added the Minister of Foreign Affairs. He clarified that this includes defense spending and decisions regarding migration policy. "Poland is doing what our allies will only begin to do. With restored credibility in the EU and good relations with the United States, Poland will be a leader in the process of increasing the EU's resilience," he said.
MOD chief: the American people have decided
In his statement, Deputy Prime Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz expressed full readiness to cooperate with the new administration. "The American people have decided. Congratulations are coming from all over the world, and I also congratulate the president-elect," he said.
