Works over subsidies for people in need of support due to increase in electricity prices are ongoing, spokesperson for the Polish government Piotr Müller said on Friday.
"Ongoing are the final legislative works over a subsidy package for people who will require special assistance when it comes to energy prices," government spokesperson Piotr Müller said on Friday.
He added that energy prices depend on two factors: EU climate policy and Russia's gas blackmail.
Müller also said the energy prices were ten times higher than in the beginning of 2021. "These prices have been caused by EU's inadequate reactions to the issue of potential energy blackmail on Russia's part," he added.
"Due to these factors, namely the climate policy on one hand, and Russia's gas energy blackmail on the other, the Polish government is preparing a certain package of solutions. As far as I know, it's been already drafted," he added.
Łukasz Schreiber from PM's office, also present at the conference, said the project was meant to mainly support people in the most difficult financial situations and pensioners.
Extra 1.5 billion zlotys
Poland will provide consumers with an additional 1.5 billion zlotys ($380 million) in subsidies as energy prices climb, Poland's climate minister said earlier on Friday. Benchmark European gas prices have rocketed as tight supply has collided with high demand in economies recovering from the COVID-19 pandemic, dragging up wholesale electricity costs. "This is a matter that is a priority for me and the solutions we are proposing are valued at 1.5 billion zlotys. We will cover 2.6 million households," Climate Minister Michał Kurtyka told Polish public radio. The aim is to support Poland's poorest households and could come to 700 zlotys a year for a household of four, Kurtyka said.
