Three people on bicycles - a 31-year-old mother with her two 8-year-old children - were fatally hit by a train on an unguarded crossing in Walentowo (Kuyavian-Pomeranian voivodeship). The police and the prosecutor's office are investigating the circumstances of the tragic accident.
According to Marcin Jaworski from State Fire Service in Włocławek, a train fatally hit 3 people at a railway crossing in Walentowo, Lubień Kujawski Municipality. The accident took place around 7.30 am.
Soon after it was confirmed that a mother with her two children were the victims. They all died at the scene. The woman was 31 years old, the twins - a boy and a girl - were both 8. They were living in one of the villages in the municipality.
"According to initial findings, it seems that they didn't notice the train and drove onto the crossing. The were all hit by the train and died as a result on the scene," Anita Szefler-Ciupińska from Włocławek Police said. She also denied earlier reports saying that all three had been hit by another train coming from the opposite direction.
The police have also secured the footage recorded by a camera at the front of the train.
"The most likely cause of the accident was carelessness. The woman and one of the children rode on one bike, the other child on another bike," said Arkadiusz Arkuszewski from the Regional Prosecutor's Office in Włocławek. He said that an investigation has been launched and confirmed that the children were twins.
The police officers from Włocławek are determining the circumstances of the accident under the supervision of the prosecutor. The train drivers were tested for breath alcohol content - they were sober. The railway commission will also look into the tragic accident.
