Poland has a place in global politics, and that is evident today. I believe that any president of the United States, whoever they may be, must respect Poland and its position in Europe, said Grzegorz Schetyna, a senator from Civic Coalition and former Minister of Foreign Affairs and Speaker of the Sejm. In Tuesday's interview with TVN24, he also discussed Civic Coalition’s potential candidate for the presidential election.
In Tuesday's edition of Kropka nad i, Grzegorz Schetyna, a senator from the Civic Coalition, former Minister of Foreign Affairs, and former Speaker of the Sejm, commented on the U.S. presidential elections.
In this context, he was asked who would find it easier to converse with Donald Trump if he were to return to the White House — Rafał Trzaskowski or Radosław Sikorski. Both politicians from the Civic Coalition are mentioned as potential candidates for the party in next year’s presidential election in Poland.
"Definitely both of them," said Schetyna. "They both speak excellent English and understand international politics." He also emphasized that "it’s impossible to predict who they will be talking to."
"The conversation of each of them, if they were president of the Republic of Poland, with the president of the United States would be on an equal level, one that guarantees the Polish voice would be heard in the White House. It will never again be the case that the Polish president will be standing while signing a document drafted by the president of the United States, who is sitting at a desk and handing him a paper to sign," said Schetyna, referring to President Andrzej Duda's visit to the White House and his famous photo with Donald Trump in 2018.
"This will never be the case again. Poland has a place in foreign policy, in global politics, and that is evident today. I believe that any president of the United States, whoever they may be, must respect Poland and Poland's position in Europe," he added.
Schetyna: we will choose the one with a better chance of winning
Asked who will be the candidate of the Civic Coalition in next year's presidential election, Schetyna replied, "We have exactly one month for the Civic Coalition to make a decision."
"Both are excellent candidates. I believe it’s very important to have in-depth research on this issue, especially when it comes to the second round: how the Civic Coalition candidate will mobilize PiS voters, how they will motivate Civic Coalition voters, and how they will reach those who are not politically engaged," Schetyna emphasized.
"Both have all the qualifications. I know both of them and I’ve welcomed both into the Civic Platform. Unfortunately, only one can be chosen. I would most like to choose between one and the other," he said on TVN24.
"We will choose the one with a better chance of winning," he added.
