Romanian President Klaus Iohannis welcomed representatives of the 12 EU members between the Adriatic, Baltic and Black Seas at the start of the third Three Seas summit in Bucharest in Tuesday.
The summit, which is part of the Three Seas Initiative established by the Croatian and Polish governments in 2016, aims to strengthen cooperation between the countries involved.
Among the leaders Iohannis welcomed at the start of the summit were Croatian President Kolinda Grabar-Kitarovic, Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki, Lithuanian President Dalia Grybauskaite and EU Commission head Jean-Claude Juncker.
German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas was also present, as was U.S. Secretary of Energy Rick Perry, representing the importance of strengthening trans-Atlantic relations.
Iohannis said in the run-up to the summit that the Initiative the countries involved were working on the "real convergence" of their economies with their western EU counterparts.
Among the participating states are the three Baltic states (Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania), the countries in the Visegrad group (Poland, Slovakia, the Czech Republic and Hungary), as well as Austria, Slovenia, Croatia, Bulgaria and Romania.
