Polish authorities reported on Friday (March 27) the number of coronavirus infected people has jumped to 1389 with 16 deaths so far. Although the number of cases is highly likely to raise further, it is still low compared to other European countries.
Polish cities are stepping up efforts to prevent the spread of coronavirus and enforce compliance with the drastic measures introduced by the government earlier this week.
The new constraints include a ban on gatherings of more than two people and a lockdown confining people to their homes except for essential activities, which would include food shopping, dog-walking, going to work and taking care of elderly relatives.
In the southern city of Kraków, workers in protective suits disinfected public spaces, police cars cruised the streets of the city using loud speakers to urge residents to remain at home.
Poland, a country of 38 million, has so far reported 1,389 infections. Sixteen people have died.
Most said that although the number of cases is highly likely to raise, it was still low compared to other European countries.
Adriana Rodrigues, a Spanish student who came to Poland as a tourist just before international flights were suspended grounding her in Krakow said the relatively low number of confirmed cases in Poland and the drastic measures in introduced early, may help contain the spread.
Others, too, remained optimistic.
"It's going to be ok. We will suffer, but we have to roll up our sleeves, keep the head up and smile," Kazimiera Rogozińska, a Kraków florist said.
