Fire service units have already been dispatched over 150 times after severe storms hit the Warmian-Masurian province in northeastern Poland. Luckily, no one was hurt. Scout summer camp in Ostróda country has been evacuated.
Most of the weather-related incidents in the region were reported around Iława and Ostróda. Firefighters had to intervene, among other places, in Działdowo, Nidzica, Nowe Miasto Lubawskie and Olsztyn. More reports have been coming in the afternoon.
In most cases, the reports pertained to fallen trees blocking the roads, as well as flooded basements and property. In Jonkowo, Kwiecewo, Karaś and Iława, trees fell on parked cars. In Domkowo, the wind peeled the roof off of a residential building.
Rafał Melnyk from Warmian-Masurian fire service said that 68 people were evacuated from a scout summer camp organised near Białka at Dreńskie Lake. They were transported to a nearby school in Łukta.
"On Friday afternoon, as well as in the evening, heavy storms are expected to appear across Poland until late night hours" - said Szymon Ogórek from Poland's Institute of Meteorology and Water Management.
"The storms may be accompanied by intensive occurrences such as heavy rainfall up to 40mm (40 litres per m2), as well as strong gusts of wind reaching the speed up to 80 km/h," he warned. "Hail is also likely to fall locally," he added.
The weather forecaster also warned that heavy rainfall was likely to result in flooding, especially in towns and hillside areas.
