We would like the top officials in Brussels to serve the purpose of building a strong EU, free of protectionism, supporting common market and ensuring a fair budget for the next framework, said Polish PM Mateusz Morawiecki on Tuesday in Brussels.
As Morawiecki told journalists before the summit in Brussels, his cabinet will try its best so that people holding top EU offices would "serve the purpose of building a strong EU, free of protectionism, supporting common market and ensuring a fair budget for the next framework". As issues key for Poland, he listed energy, climate and economy in general.
"For us these are key issues, for us it's crucial who will represent whose interests. For us it's crucial how each potential candidate will respond to the problems that I have just listed," said Morawiecki. He added that for Poland it was also important that filling top EU jobs to be carried out based on a consensus between particular member-states.
Morawiecki was also asked about the potential candidacy of Slovakia's Maros Sefcovic. According to Czech daily "Hospodarske noviny", the Visegrad Group will propose Sefcovic as the new head of the European Commission.
"We treat the selection as a bundle, namely there are 5 most important posts, head of the European Commission, the European Council, the European Parliament, the European Central Bank and the High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy. We want to treat all five as a whole and Mr Sefcovic is one of the candidates considered for many positions. He always acted fair towards Poland, he always tried to be fair regarding the difficult energy portfolio," said Polish PM. He added, however, that Sefcovic isn't the only candidate under consideration.
The EU leaders held a flurry of bilateral meetings on Tuesday to start deliberations on the bloc's new leadership.
The difficult-to-call process will lead to an arcane compromise. Unanimity is not required though it is hard to see a candidate succeeding against the will of more than just a handful of leaders, as that would risk damaging their future cooperation and stalling the EU's decision-making.
