The National Council of the Judiciary adopted a resolution on Thursday regarding asking President Andrzej Duda to appoint 12 judges of the Supreme Court's Disciplinary Chamber. The remaining four 4 seats were to be filled in the next round of the vote, however, none of the candidates received the required majority of votes.
As the chief of the tellers Marek Jaskulski informed, absolute majority of at least nine votes was cast on the following candidates: prosecutor Małgorzata Bednarek, prosecutor Jarosław Duś, Asst Prof. Jan Majchrowski, judge Piotr Niedzielak, solicitor Tomasz Przesławski, prosecutor Adam Roch, solicitor Adam Tomczyński, solicitor Małgorzata Ułaszonek-Kubacka, prosecutor Ryszard Witkowski, prosecutor Jacek Wygoda, judge Konrad Wytrykowski, prosecutor Paweł Zubert.
As the number of succesful candidates was lower than the number of seats in the Disciplinary Chamber, the KRS proceeded to vote over initially rejected candidates but those who got most of the votes. Those candidates were: Mateusz Ciepły, Celina Czerwińska, Lidia Dudek, Grzegorz Hawryłkiewicz, Jolanta Korwin-Piotrowska and Piotr Puławski. None of them, however, received the required number of votes.
There are 44 seats to fill in the Supreme Court, of which 16 in the newly created Disciplinary Chamber. In total, 100 candidates applied for the Disciplinary Chamber positions, however, some of the bids were later withdrawn. Not all of the candidates showed up for the hearing session. According to KRS Office, the team has interviewed 63 candidates for this chamber.
Request to appoint the judges will be sent over to President Andrzej Duda.
On Friday, the KRS is holding a session during which candidates for the Criminal Chamber of the Supreme Court are to be selected.
From Monday to Wednesday, four teams of the National Council of the Judiciary interviewed the candidates for the Supreme Court.
In the beginning of next week, on Monday and Tuesday, the National Council of the Judiciary will convene to fill the seats in the other two chambers: Extraordinary Supervision and Civic, said Leszek Mazur.
