At a press conference in Warsaw on Tuesday (November 12), Josep Borrell, Vice-President of the European Commission and the outgoing head of EU diplomacy, and Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski addressed key issues related to European support for Ukraine. Borrell emphasized that continuing aid for Ukraine requires not only political determination but also adequate financial resources and a strong political will to sustain support amidst the evolving situation.
Radosław Sikorski said at the conference that Europe must firmly uphold the principles of international law to maintain the fundamental stance that borders in Europe cannot be changed by force.
He pointed out that the European Union faces crucial decisions that will impact its credibility and future as a strategic player. The minister noted that discussions on Ukraine strategy and support will continue at the upcoming EU Foreign Affairs Council.
Sikorski also underscored Europe’s duty to protect its citizens and ensure stability in the region, advocating for a fair agreement that reinforces international norms. He expressed concern that abandoning these values could lead to a difficult future.
Borrell: Americans cannot be the only ones taking action
Josep Borrell stated at the conference that he had just returned from his final visit to Ukraine and had made a stop in Warsaw.
He mentioned that Ukraine was the top priority during the current political mandate and was also a major priority for Poland. According to the EU Commission Vice-President, European support for Ukraine had been significant and had reached an unprecedented level in history, but he also stressed that much more still needed to be done.
Borrell noted that Poland had always led the European Union’s efforts to provide Ukraine with what it needed for self-defense and remained a key country in sustaining the vital support Ukraine required at this critical time.
He added that this topic would be the focus of discussions at the upcoming Foreign Affairs Council meeting next Monday.
The head of EU diplomacy stressed that Europe could not allow a situation where the Americans were the only ones acting while Europeans merely responded.
Borrell also argued that Europe needed to take responsibility and ensure Ukraine that its support would continue.
He pointed out that this would require the appropriate resources, determination, political will, and above all, financial resources.
