On Friday in Warsaw, at the age of 62 died the chairman of the All-Poland Alliance of Trade Unions (OPZZ) - Jan Guz. He headed the organisation since 2004.
"With deepest regret we inform about the death of the the Chairman of OPZZ Jan Guz. Our hearts go out to his relatives and friends," the OPZZ wrote on its website on Friday.
"I learned about Jan Guz's passing a few hours ago in a hospital in Warsaw," said the chairman of the Polish Teachers' Union, Sławomir Broniarz. Jan Guz was born in 1956. He got a degree in politicial sciences nad finished a postgraduate managerial studies at the Management Faculty at the University of Warsaw. He worked for Voluntary Work Corps (OHP), among other roles, as youth educator and the deputy chief of the organisation. Later on, was also a chief mechanic, director of mechanic department and co-run many companies.
He was also the head of territorial structures of the All-Poland Alliance of Trade Unions. Between 1997 and 2004 he was the vice chairman of the OPZZ and from April 2004 he took over as the chairman.
In 2010, President Lech Kaczyński appointed him member of the National Development Council. In October 2015, he became a member of the newly-formed Social Dialogue Council.
