I have submitted my candidacy to run in presidential preliminaries within Civic Coalition - the Mayor of Poznań Jacek Jaśkowiak informed on Wednesday.
"Poland needs a strong president, who would end rule of law violations, bring order out of chaos and partisanship, and restore a sense of community in the people. I want to take on this challenge. That's why I have submitted my candidacy to run in presidential preliminaries within Civic Coalition," Jacek Jaśkowiak wrote on Twitter on Wednesday evening.
The deadline for submitting candidates for the preliminaries has passed on Tuesday at midnight. The requirement was to collect at least 30 signatures from members of the Civic Platform's National Council. Małgorzata Kidawa-Błońska lodged her bid on Monday after collecting 150 signatures.
There was no information on any other candidates by the end of Tuesday. In a morning radio interview on Wednesday, Kidawa-Błońska herself was sure she was the sole candidate.
Later on Wednesday, PO leader Grzegorz Schetyna, who was in Zagreb at the EPP congress, told journalists another candidate had submitted his bid. "I was informed that there is a second bid, so there are two candidates. We will inform on Friday who that person is, and the electoral commission will examine the application," Schetyna said.
After Schetyna's comment rumours appeared in the media suggesting that it's none other than mayor Jaśkowiak who may run in the preliminaries. In the evening, Jaśkowiak confirmed his bid to face Małgorzata Kidawa-Błońska.
