“The entire European Union should guarantee a membership perspective to Eastern Partnership countries,” said Polish President Andrzej Duda on Wednesday following a meeting with his Georgian counterpart Giorgi Margvelashvili.
During his joint press conference with Mr. Margvelashvili, Mr. Duda revealed that the meeting revolved around such topics as the upcoming Eastern Partnership summit in Brussels, where EU leaders will talk to those from Ukraine, Georgia, Republic of Moldova, Belarus, Armenia and Azerbaijan.
President Duda noted that it was in the best interest of both Poland and the entire Community to make sure that the door to the European Union remained open. He claimed that it was essential for the EU to demonstrate that it was open to welcoming future new member states prepared to join the Union after having met all the accession requirements.
He emphasized that “the European Union was fraught with crises”, also embodied by Brexit, which, according to the Polish President, dealt a major weakening blow to the Community.
“I claimed that if one assumed that the European Union shrank as a result of the UK leaving, and that there was no option for new member states to join the Community, that, to my mind, would mean the beginning of the end of the EU,” the President remarked. He added that “more countries may seek to exit the European Union in future.”
According to the President, in order to survive and develop, the European Union must seek to admit new Member States and thus to grow its economic, human and demographic potential. He said that this opportunity should be open and “very clearly guaranteed” to Eastern Partnership countries by the entire EU.
