Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban called for the beginning of a new Europe on Friday as he laid out his party's programme for the upcoming European Parliamentary elections on May 23.
Speaking to members of his ruling Fidesz Party and supporters, Orban said he wanted new leaders who would stop migration into the bloc.
Standing under a banner with Fidesz's campaign slogan reading, "For us Hungary comes first," Orban laid out a 7 point action plan focussed on tightening European Union laws on migration and calling for the new leaders of the EU to have an anti-migration stance.
Orban, a nationalist whose politics is mostly built on an anti-immigrant message, has been at the centre of a conflict that has threatened to erode the support of the European People's Party (EPP), the largest group in the European Parliament.
In March the EPP, voted to suspend Fidesz amid concerns it has violated EU principles on the rule of law, with its anti-immigration campaigns and judicial reforms.
Orban has said that the outcome of the European vote would determine whether Fidesz remains in the EPP group or seeks a new alliance in Europe.
