One of the largest ships used in building offshore wind turbines will be overhauled in Gdańsk shipyard. Crane ship Orion I needs to be repaired after an accident which took place in May, 2020, in a shipyard in Rostock, Germany. "Ten large shipyards in Europe competed in a bid to renovate the vessel, but the Gdańsk Remontowa Shiprepair Yard won" - said Grzegorz Landowski, communications director from Remontowa Holding.
Orion I docked in Gdańsk Remontowa Shipyard on Friday. It's a state-of-the-art, as well as one of the largest and most powerful ships used in building tall wind turbines offshore. "In the heart of this ship is a powerful crane which can lift 5,000 tonnes at an outreach of 35 metres. That's approximately the weight of 9 fully loaded Airbus A380 planes" - Grzegorz Landowski said.
The crane was severely damaged in an accident during load tests at a German shipyard in Rostock in May 2020.
"It's been almost completely damaged. The part of the ship where the crane was installed has also suffered" - Landowski added.
Orion I will spend approximately 4 months in Gdańsk.
Mr Landowski also said the project was very demanding and 10 large European shipyards had competed to win the bid. But the Gdańsk shipyard was finally chosen.
"Over 200 tonnes of steel will have to replaced, and this steel is between 80 and 150 milimetres thick. Such task required a shipyard specialising in a very difficult technology of welding such thick steel" - the communications director said.
